Homestay Trekking in Ladakh
Sleep inside real Ladakhi homes, eat Skyu and Chutagi cooked over a wood fire, and walk trails used by mountain people for centuries. Four unique routes — from the baby-friendly Sham Valley to the legendary Markha Valley and the rare Snow Leopard Trek.
What Is a Homestay Trek?
A homestay trek means sleeping inside the actual homes of Ladakhi families in remote mountain villages — not a hotel, not a tent. You sleep in a traditional room, eat the same home-cooked food as your host family, and experience genuine daily Ladakhi life.
Unlike camping treks, you carry no heavy tent or cooking equipment. Your local guide is born in Ladakh — he knows every family, every trail and every story behind every monastery you pass. This is the most authentic Ladakh that most tourists never see.
- Sleep in centuries-old stone houses in mountain villages
- Eat home-cooked Skyu, Thukpa, Tsampa and Butter Tea
- No heavy camping gear — lighter packs, more enjoyment
- Your stay directly supports local Ladakhi families financially
- Homestay rates fixed by local union — ₹1,200–1,500/person/night incl. meals
- Recognised under Ladakh’s Holistic Homestay Support Framework 2026

Tips for Your Homestay Trek
Everything you need to know before lacing up your boots.
Acclimatise First
Spend minimum 2 full days resting in Leh before starting any trek. Do not skip this — altitude sickness ruins trips. Short walks in Leh are fine but no hard exercise.
Homestay Pricing
Rates are fixed by the local village union at ₹1,200–1,500 per person per night including dinner, breakfast and a packed lunch. Do not haggle — this is the villagers’ livelihood.
Dry Compost Toilets
Remote villages use traditional dry/compost toilets — an important part of Ladakh’s eco-friendly culture. Please brief guests gently before departure so they are prepared.
Sustainable Policy 2026
Ladakh Tourism has launched the Holistic Homestay Support Framework. Choosing homestay treks directly contributes to preserving Ladakhi culture and the local economy.
What to Pack
Good trekking boots, warm layers (even in summer — nights are cold), sun protection, water bottle, personal medicines, trekking poles for high passes, headlamp.
No Signal — Enjoy It!
Most remote villages have no mobile signal. This is part of the magic. Carry a local SIM (BSNL has best coverage in remote areas) and let family know your itinerary.
Trek Responsibly · Support Local Families
When you choose a Himalayan Tamers homestay trek, your money goes directly to the families who need it most — not to big hotel chains.
100% to Local Families
Every rupee you pay for homestay goes directly to your host family. Zero middlemen. Real community impact.
Low Carbon Footprint
Trekking leaves far less environmental impact than motorised tours. We follow carry-in, carry-out waste practices on all treks.
Preserve Ladakhi Culture
Homestay tourism keeps remote villages economically viable — preserving ancient Ladakhi traditions, language and architecture.
Local Guides Only
We only employ guides born in Ladakh. Their knowledge of the land, families and trails is unmatched by any outsider.
Trek with People Who Know Ladakh Best
We are not a booking platform — we are locals who have walked these trails our whole lives.
Born Here
Our guides grew up in the villages you will walk through. They know every family, trail and stone.
Safety First
All guides trained in high-altitude first aid. We carry emergency oxygen and monitor your health daily on the trail.
Korean-Friendly
Many of our trekkers are from Korea. Full KakaoTalk support. 카카오톡으로 문의하세요!
Fully Custom
Want extra days, a different route, or a summit attempt added? We tailor every single trek.
All Trekkers Welcome
Solo, couples, families, groups — everyone is welcome. Minimum 2 persons per trek.
